The adult Sunday school class has been engaged in some rather interesting conversation recently. In our study of Phyllis Tickle’s book The Great Emergence, we have been challenged to think about how the church is experiencing a radical transformation in the way it proclaims the gospel.

Tickle suggests that every 500 years the church goes through what she calls “a great rummage sale,” in which paradigms we have grown accustomed to are eventually replaced by models that feel strange and uncomfortable. These changes have been driven by a number of cultural, social, religious, and political factors, which eventually result in a dramatic reconfiguration of the religious landscape. According to Tickle we’ve been moving perceptibly toward the next “emergence” since the 1950’s. This article doesn’t allow me the space to detail her observations, but she’s definitely on to something.

As I read her book, and now as I help facilitate the adult class, I find that I’m able to put to rest some of the “unsettledness” that I have been feeling about the church. I’m also able to make sense of some things that perhaps before I would have viewed as mere trends not to be taken too seriously.

So, a couple of things …

First, I encourage you to attend the adult class. We meet at 10:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall. Don’t worry that you didn’t get in at the start. There’s always room for you and I promise you’ll be able to pick up the discussion.

If you’re wondering where the church is headed and how that might impact you/us, or if you’ve been sensing that “the times they are a changin,’” then you will probably find this class fascinating.

Second, we’ve invited three mission developers from our synod to be with us for our Tuesday evening services during Lent. I had the privilege of hearing them speak about how they are doing ministry in their unique settings, and found myself making a lot of connections with Tickle’s observations about the emerging church. More information about these services can be found in this edition of Revelations. I encourage you to set aside the time to be with us for worship and fellowship.

Traveling with you,
Pastor Chuck

Worship with Us During Lent!

Please join us during the holy season of Lent as we journey with our Lord to the cross. Besides our Sunday worship schedule, where we will focus on the Lenten season from the perspective of Mark’s Gospel, there are many midweek opportunities for worship and fellowship.

Begin the Lenten season with worship on Ash Wednesday, February 22, 7:30 PM. Both the Lord’s Supper and the Imposition of Ashes will be offered.

Continue the journey at our Tuesday evening midweek services, featuring Holden Evening Prayer. Each service is preceded by a light supper beginning at 6:00 PM, with worship to follow at 7:15 PM. This year’s theme is “Beyond Survival Mode: the Church’s Mission in Post-Christian America.” We are pleased to announce that guest preachers will include three mission developers serving the Northeastern Ohio Synod.

- Tuesday, March 6 Pastor Christine Thompson,
Detroit Shoreway Ministries

- Tuesday, March 13 Pastor Lisa Arledge,
Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church, North Ridgeville

- Tuesday, March 20 Pastor Mark Rollenhagen,

Worship Service Recordings
for Shut-ins

First Church has a program to provide CD recordings, currently of the lesson readings, Gospel reading, and sermon, for members who are unable to attend regular services.

The shut-in will be provided with a CD player, on loan from the church, with which to listen to the service recording mailed or delivered to them each week. Plans are to expand the recording capability to the entire service in the future.

If you know of any or our members, or nonmembers, who may be interested in participating in this program, please contact the church office or click here.

We now have a special page on this Web site devoted to the prior sermons from each week of service.

Please click here to view the sermons you can download.
